Random Chance of the Universe

Senior Group Exhibition, Spring 2024

On display at Brevard College's Spiers Gallery from April 5th through April 26th in 2024, Random Chance of the Universe featured an array of works developed by that year's six graduating seniors. From experimental animation and large-scale illustrations to a variety of sculptural installations, paintings, and more, each artist focused on immersing the viewer in unorthodox and engaging environments:

For this exhibition, I created a series of eight sculptural pieces located within the main gallery space, inspired by the bold shape language, clean lines, and eclectic mid-century modern design of the 1960s. Building upon the aesthetics used in my previous works and drawing major cues from Retrofuturism and other historical art movements, this collection serves as a culmination of my student art career and a jumping-off point for new and exciting pieces to come.

“My body of work, consisting of four in-the-round rockets and four wall-mounted pieces, draws extensively from the imaginative artistic trends of the 1960s alongside the bold and spirited aesthetics associated with mid-century modern design, taking primary inspiration from events like the 1964 New York World's Fair, as well as home decor, architecture, and graphics from this period.

Both mini collections are made from a mix of painted birch, stained walnut, and steel rods. The designs are characterized by their use of striking dynamic shapes, complemented by a vivid color scheme of yellows, greens, blues, and oranges, with accenting pops of rich browns and chrome pulled directly from '60s iconography, and place formal emphasis on unity and balance through line variation and unique joinery.

In blending these elements and motifs, I've aimed to create engaging, eclectic pieces that encompass the energetic, nostalgic, and kitschy spirit of Retrofuturism while evoking a sense of wonder and possibility.”
